Financing Mechanism

Together with countries, members and collaborators, the Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance brings forward and support solutions for a global sustainable ODS/HFC banks management. However, increasing knowledge and advancing technology for the mitigation potential in the cooling sector is not enough to tackle the challenge. Adequate financing solutions must be secured too.

Activities

Since its beginnings, COPA has taken a closer look at the opportunities and barriers for accessing finance for cooling mitigation projects involving ODS and HFC emission reductions. A COPA study published in 2023 provide an initial financial landscape, outlining both barriers and opportunities and established a first common platform for the members in this aspect.

Building upon the above study, a special focus emerged assessing the potential financing streams available through carbon markets and participation in Paris agreement Article 6 activities.

In addition, it was acknowledge that a huge challenge for COPA members as project developer is often also simply because the business part of the identified mitigation concept is not mature enough to apply for, or receive, financing. In short, these ideas are not “ready for finance” and need development support to become eligible to apply for available climate finance opportunities. Thus one working stream for COPA in the financing mechanism thematic has focused on supporting members to get their initial (mitigation) project concepts to become “ready for finance”

In this section, the accumulated COPA knowledge materials and activities on the above financing challenges for ODS and HFC mitigation projects are made available. View the recorded online sessions, download templates and publications or access the expert presentations materials.
