The Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA) has played a pivotal role in raising awareness of the global need to address the management of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) banks. A sustainable future requires more than just attention—it demands action, coordination, and the right implementation models.

Activities

COPA has been proactively advancing the development and implementation of innovative projects aimed at reducing ODS and HFC emissions through its Implementation Models framework. A cornerstone of this effort is the Call for Ideas, which invites COPA members to propose scalable, high-impact solutions that address the management of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) banks. This initiative seeks to identify and support projects that combine environmental benefits with economic viability.

COPA’s activities within the framework of the call for ideas were:

  • Idea 1: Assess COPA’s project pipeline for carbon finance potential, including the development of a finance mechanism report and the analysis of project viability, eligibility, and policy alignment for specific activities.
  • Idea 2: Support the Froid Vert Togo project to help Togo achieve its NDC targets by reducing GHG emissions in the refrigeration sector by 0.8% (25.63 GgCO2-eq) by 2030 and implementing end-of-life equipment management systems.
  • Idea 3: Conduct capacity-building sessions on refrigerant recovery, reclaim, and fundamental processes, equipping participants with practical skills and knowledge to handle refrigerants safely and efficiently. The training focuses on recovery techniques, reclaim logistics, and the economic, regulatory, and environmental aspects of ODS and HFC management.
  • Idea 4: Study to Develop Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in RAC sector Pakistan

Through its Implementation Models, COPA provides valuable resources, technical support, and expert guidance to improve the management of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) banks. By turning the concept of green cooling into practical, actionable solutions, COPA actively contributes to global climate and ozone protection goals.
